Improve Rating System: Does Not Help Find Good Trails
I've run 100's of the trails on AllTrails and investigated many more. I'm a runner and believe that a good run is usually a good walk/hike. So ratings and reviews for running and walking should help me find the best trails "easily". What I found is that to find good trails or the best in an area, the ratings are almost meaningless. The question of "How was the trail?" is answered differently by people of different capability and experience.
I have observed a lot of the following ratings:
I finished this challenge and so I rate the trail (but really myself) as 5 star because I did it. This is evidence by the number of boring trails, some paths along roads, that obtain numerous 5 star ratings.
The procedure I follow is to scour through the written reviews and hope that there is one that details the terrain, difficulty, noticeable sites/views seen, and ideally descriptors of enjoyment/enthusiasm. I mainly ignore ratings without reviews.
I recommend:
a. the question is improved
b. (optional) more specific sub-questions added
c. The ability to give kudos to the rating/review that was most helpful, if there is one.
d. Prioritise ratings that are supported by reviews and the optional sub-questions
Possible questions:
- How much did you enjoy this trail?
- How challenging was this trail for you?
- Would you recommend this trail to others?
- Who would you recommend this trail to?
