AllTrails has three difficulty ratings to filter your trail search: Easy, Moderate, and Hard. Our trail team assigns these ratings based on a few factors:
- We start with an equation to determine the minimum difficulty rating for the trail.
- From there, we take additional details into account. We might make adjustments if a trail includes scrambles, rock climbing, obstructions, or uneven ground. We also look at whether a trail requires orienteering skills for wayfinding.
Keep in mind that these ratings are for millions of AllTrails community members. Trails that are easy for you may be moderate for someone else. If you want to better understand a trail’s difficulty level, get more context by scrolling down the page. You'll see a description written by our team, as well as reviews from your fellow trail-goers.
