Note: AllTrails for Apple Watch is not a standalone app, so you’ll need your phone nearby when you use it.
Installing the AllTrails Apple Watch app
Via iPhone:
1. Make sure that you already have the AllTrails app installed on your iPhone!
2. On your iPhone, open the 'Watch app'
3. Tap the 'My Watch' tab
4. Search for the AllTrails app
5. Tap 'Install'
*On your Apple Watch, apps appear on your Home screen. Press the digital crown to see the home screen, then look for the AllTrails icon.
Via Apple Watch:
You can also get apps from the App Store on your Apple Watch. Here's how:
- Press the digital crown on your watch to see the home screen, then tap the App Store
- Tap search to find the AllTrails app using Scribble or Dictation, or scroll down to look for the AllTrails app
- Once you have found 'AllTrails', tap 'Get'
*The AllTrails Apple Watch app relies on the AllTrails iPhone app, so you’ll need to download the AllTrails iPhone app from the App Store if you have not already. Because the Apple Watch can only be paired with iPhones, this feature is not available for Android users.
Using the AllTrails Apple Watch app to track your activity
Adding a route to your watch
- Tap Add Route: On your watch, tap the option to add a route.
- Browse trails: View the list of available trails. You can swipe or use the digital crown to scroll through. You can also find your favorites by scrolling to the bottom of the list.
- Select your trail: Tap on a trail to see more details.
- Tap Start: Ready to hit the trail? Tap “Start” to begin!
Navigating during your activity
Once you start an activity, you can rotate through three main views:
- Controls: Manage your activity with options to pause, resume, or finish.
- Compass: If you start on a chosen trail, this will be your default view to help guide you along the way.
- Stats and activity tracking: Check your active stats like time, distance, pace, and elevation gain. If you start without a chosen trail, this will be your default view.
Using the compass
- Swipe to the compass: This is the third screen, all the way to the right.

Compass information: The compass will let you know if you’re on the right track:
- On route: You’re within 10 meters of the trail.
- Near route: You’re 10 to 50 meters away.
- Off route: You’re more than 50 meters off the trail—time to recalibrate!
Managing controls during your activity
- Access controls: Swipe to the first screen on the far left.
- Pause and resume: Need a break? Tap “Pause” to pause your activity, then “Resume” when you’re ready to continue.
- Finish your activity: Tap “Finish” when you’re done, and your activity will be saved.
Finishing Up
- Pause your activity: Tap “Pause” on the control screen.
- End your adventure: Tap “Finish” to wrap up your activity.
- Celebrate your journey: You’ll see a “Way to Go” screen with your stats.
- Review your stats: Use the digital crown or swipe to review the details.
- Exit: When you’re done, tap the “X” to exit the summary screen.

The new compass navigation makes it easy to navigate at a glance. Viewing trail maps on the watch app is no longer supported.

Yes. AllTrails for Apple Watch is not a standalone app, so you’ll need your phone nearby when you use it. We recommend putting your iPhone in a pocket or backpack, so that you can focus on the views ahead and go hands-free.
What happens if I lose cell signal while out on the trail?
