elevation gain is way off

I presume I am doing something wrong.  The device I am using is Samsung xcover pro.

  You're not doing anything wrong.  GPS satellite data is much less accurate in the vertical than horizontal directions.  True elevations associated with coordinates can be applied afterwards.
