You may notice that the app is closing out of what you're viewing if it's left running in the background. When you bring the app back from the background it may not open to the same screen you were previously viewing.
If you aren't actively using Navigate to follow along your route, iOS will likely shut down the app, determining that there isn't enough activity to justify keeping it running in the background. This tends to happen when you're using other apps and have AllTrails running in the background.
To prevent this from happening, we recommend using Navigate to follow along your planned trail, which will provide enough activity to make our app a less likely candidate for a shutdown. That way, the app will run in the background and will be on the same screen when you unlock your phone.
If you've been using Navigate and the app inexplicably closes, upon reopening the app you can return to your trail navigation by tapping the Navigate icon in the bottom navigation bar.
If you're currently recording an activity, this icon will be shimmering.
You may be greeted by a message indicating that your activity was paused due to the app closing. Simply tap the 'resume' button to continue recording your activity.
If you haven't used Navigate yet, there are a few ways to launch this feature in the AllTrails app:
Via the 'Navigate' button:
- Tap 'Navigate' on the bottom navigation bar
- Tap 'Add route' to select a route to use for navigation
- Tap 'Start' to begin recording your activity (skip step 3 if starting without a route)
- If you want to pause your activity, tap the 'Pause' button. Tap 'Resume' to continue your activity.
Via a trail details page:
- Select a trail from the 'Explore' page or 'Lists' page (under 'Saved')
- On the trail details page, tap 'Map'
- The trail map will load into Navigate, along with your current location
- You can then tap 'Start' to begin tracking and recording your activity
Via your map downloads:
- Tap 'Saved' on the bottom navigation bar
- Select 'Downloads' from the tabs at the top of the screen
- Select a map from the list
- The trail map will load into Navigate, along with your current location
- You can then tap 'Start' to begin tracking and recording your activity
