You may notice that the app is closing out of what you are viewing if it is left running in the background. When you bring the app back from the background it may not open to the same screen you were previously viewing.
If you are not actively using Navigator to follow along your route, and are instead using the app to explore trails, view and follow along a trail map, etc, iOS will likely shut down the app as there is not enough activity to keep it running in the background. This will particularly happen if you are using other apps and have AllTrails running in the background. To prevent a shutdown of the AllTrails app, we recommend using Navigator to follow along your planned trail, which will provide enough activity to make our app a less likely candidate for a shutdown. That way, the app will run in the background and will be on the same screen when you unlock your phone.
If you have been using the AllTrails Navigator and the app inexplicably closes, upon reopening the app you can return to the Navigator by tapping the Navigator icon in the bottom navigation bar:
If you are currently recording an activity, this icon will be shimmering.
You may be greeted by a message indicating that your activity was paused due to the app closing. Simply tap the 'resume' button to continue recording your activity.
If you haven't used Navigator yet, there are a few ways to launch this feature in the AllTrails app:
Via the 'Navigate' button:
- Open the AllTrails app
- Tap on ‘Navigate’ on the bottom navigation bar
- Select a route to use for navigation, or select 'Start without a route'
- Tap 'Start' to begin recording your activity
- If you wish to pause your activity, press and hold down on the 'Pause' button. Tap 'Resume' to continue your activity.
Via a Trail Details Page:
- Open the AllTrails app
- Select a trail from 'Explore' page or 'Lists' page (under 'Saved')
- On the trail details page, tap 'Navigate' (in-line with 'Directions', 'Share', and 'Download'/'My Map')
- The trail map, a green outline, will load into Navigator, along with your current location
- You can then tap 'Start' to begin tracking and recording your activity
Via your map downloads:
- Open the AllTrails app
- Tap on 'Saved' on the bottom navigation bar
- Select 'Downloads' from the tabs at the top of the screen
- Select a map from the list
- Tap 'Navigate using this route'
- The trail map, a green outline, will load into Navigator, along with your current location
- You can then tap 'Start' to begin tracking and recording your activity
