What is a Point of Interest (POI)?
Points of Interest (POIs) are noteworthy landmarks, features, or locations surfaced on the AllTrails map to help you explore with more context. POIs give you a richer understanding of what you might see along a trail — from scenic viewpoints and lakes to campgrounds and historical markers.
How do I see POIs?
You’ll notice POIs displayed across the map as either icons or photos. Just tap on one to learn more about it and see which nearby trails it connects to.
How It Works:
- Tap a POI on the map or search for one by name.
- Enter POI-focused view — see trails around the POI both on the map and in a list.
- To exit, tap the map or press X to return to the full trail view.
How many POIs are on AllTrails?
There are currently over 2.4 million POIs on the AllTrails platform!
Where do POIs come from?
Our POI data is sourced from OpenStreetMap, a free, open-source map of the world that anyone can contribute to.
What happens when I tap on a POI?
Tapping a POI brings you into a focused view where you can see a list and map of nearby trails. This helps you understand which hikes feature or pass near that point.
Why do some POIs show “no trails available”?
This means there are no verified trails in the AllTrails system that currently pass near that POI. If you know of a trail that should be associated with that POI, please submit a request — we’d love to hear from you!

Can I suggest a POI update?
Yes! If you’d like to add, update, or delete a POI:
- Submit a report to AllTrails
- Or contribute directly via OpenStreetMap — here’s a guide to help you get started
Can I turn POIs off?
POIs are part of a platform-wide feature and cannot be turned off at this time. However, we welcome your feedback! If you’d like to share thoughts on your experience, send us a message.
