Your content deserves more than an on-off switch. That's why AllTrails is excited to announce additional privacy settings, giving you more control of which items in your account are visible to whom. This article is meant to walk you through these changes, and answer a few common questions you may have.
New privacy levels:
With flexible privacy, you now have several visibility options for all of your content:
- 'Public' - Anyone on AllTrails can view
- 'Followers only' - Only your followers can view
- 'Only me' - Visible only to you
Default privacy settings:
You can set specific privacy levels based on the type of content in your account. Instead of an all or nothing approach to privacy, you'll now be able to set default privacy levels for the following types of content:
- 'Your community' - this controls the visibility of your followers and following lists
- 'Completed trails' - the list of trails that you have completed, or verified completed
- 'Activities' - your personal outdoor activities, recorded on the app or uploaded to AllTrails.com
- 'Maps' - your maps created on AllTrails.com and all items found in your 'My maps' section
- 'Lists' - your custom lists created on the app or the website
How do I adjust my default privacy settings?
Via desktop or laptop computer:

- At the top right of any page, hover over your profile image and in the drop-down select ‘Settings’
- Under 'Account Settings' in the right panel, click 'Privacy settings'
- You can choose your default privacy settings for your Community, Completed trails, Activities, Maps, and Lists
- Click 'Save' when you are finished
Via iPhone or Android app:
- Open the AllTrails app
- Tap on 'Profile' on the bottom navigation bar
-
Tap the Settings icon (
) at the top right corner
- Select 'Privacy Settings'
- You can choose your default privacy settings for your Community, Completed trails, Activities, Maps, and Lists
- Tap 'Save' in the modal after you make an adjustment
NOTE: If you have had an account for a while, adjusting your default privacy settings will only set your preferred privacy level for new items added to your account after you adjust the settings. If you would like to apply your new default settings to all of your existing content, you can do this via our website —here's how.
What if I just want to make a specific item private?
Want to keep your default privacy settings flexible, but adjust the privacy of individual items, like a specific activity? You now have that option, too! Easily control the visibility of individual maps, activities, and lists. Click the hyperlinks below for information on how to adjust the privacy settings for each type of content:

What if my account was 'Private' before?
If your account was 'Private' before, you'll be automatically updated to have a default privacy level of 'Only me' for all of your content types. Your profile photo, name, location, and high level statistics are visible by everyone. This enables other members to make sure they’ve found the right person they wish to connect with. You also have the option to require follower requests on your account — you'll find this option with the rest of your default privacy settings, as outlined here.
What about my trail reviews and uploaded trail photos?
With this update, you'll now more easily be able to contribute reviews and photos to trail pages. This allows you to share your important insights from the trail with the AllTrails community. Rest assured that any photos linked to activities or maps that have a privacy level of 'Only me' or 'Followers only' will not be visible in the public photo galleries, or publicly viewable on your profile.
How do I anonymize my profile and my trail contributions?
If you wish to anonymize your trail review contributions, we recommend adjusting your display name for AllTrails, as outlined here. You can also change your profile photo or default location, if you wish.
